The Power of Grounding: Reconnect with the Earth for Better Health

Jan 30, 2025by Keri Berardinelli

What is "Grounding", also known as "Earthing"? Is it some weird practice that's a bunch of woo-woo? What was once woo-woo is now considered scientifically validated so for those who need proof, the proof is now opening up a new frontier of continued research.

Grounding, or earthing, refers to direct skin contact with the surface of the Earth, such as with bare feet or hands, or with various commercial grounding systems. The main consensus on how grounding works is that connecting the body to the Earth enables free electrons from the Earth's surface to spread over and into the body where they have antioxidant effects. It is suggested that mobile electrons create an antioxidant mircroenvironment around areas of the body that are inflammed, hence slowing down or preventing free radicals from damaging healthy tissues.

A summary published in the Journal of Environmental and Public Health concluded that grounding appears to improve sleep, regulate the day--night cortisol rhythm, reduce pain, reduce stress, shift the autonomic nervous system from sympathetic toward parasympathetic activation, increase heart rate variability, speed wound healing, and reduce blood viscosity. This data truly shines light on why we feel so much better after being on vacation when we can dig our feet in the grass or sand, run our fingers over rock, or dip our bodies in the ocean.

Unfortunately, most of mankind has lost its connection to nature by living indoors, wearing rubber-soled shoes, and basically avoiding, or due to life obligations, unable to get outside often enough. We've disconnected from this living matrix that allows us to release negative energy in exchange for the positive, living energy that stems from all living things.

There are ways that we can reconnect to the healing vibrations of Earth energy. First, get outside more! Take 10-minute breaks throughout the day to get outside for a brief walk, or if its possible, take some of your work outside, even a phone call! Next, invest in pure essential oils and diffuse them throughout your space, or apply them topically. Essential oils are volatile oils that emit nature's vibrations and have a direct influence on your body physically and energetically. Their aromas are uplifting, balancing, calming and have the ability to support emotional clearing, so whether you're at the office or working from home, you're actively managing stress through nature's vibrations.

You may also want to consider investing in various grounding systems that come in the form of sheets, mats, wrist and ankle bands, or adhesive patches that can be used inside the home or office and offer a convenient method for grounding. At Lotus Evolutions, we offer our clients grounding during their facial treatments as they lie on a grounded mat, underlying organic, cotton sheets free from any synthetics which would get in the way of complete contact and transference of energy. Our clients leave feeling amazing--completely relaxed, rejuvenated and.. grounded! We also diffuse essential oil blends that are supportive to grounding, consisting of the essential oils pine, black spruce, and cedarwood.

It seems that the natural essences of life we've taken for granted, not fully realizing how it supports our overall health. We've relied too heavily on artificial strategies to manage health outcomes. It's time to realize that nature is our greatest healer. Fundamentally, having information that makes sense is the first step to implementation and thankfully, the woo-woo is now evidence-based.

We hope you've gained just a bit of practical knowledge to make these subtle, yet profound changes to your lifestyle that will make a world of difference.
